Welcome to Buffalo Sunrise Farm!
Thank you for taking the time to learn about our ecologically-managed family farm. An overview of our agricultural ideology and practices is offered below, however, if more detailed information is needed, feel free to contact us at your convenience.
As noted above, our approach to farming can be described as “ecological”. Many consider an ecological approach to go beyond current “organic” policies and practices which tend to be driven by consumer needs alone. Our ecological approach not only considers consumer health needs, but also the health of the broader environment we farm in a manner that is not only clean (i.e. chemical-free) but actually works to enhance the broader environment. Our wetlands are actually contracted protected areas through the Canadian Wildlife Habitat Fund. Considerate of the broader global warming crisis, we ensure that our practices rely on the lowest possible fossil fuel inputs.
Our commitment to an ecological agriculture approach also means that our animals are provided with the most humane lifestyle possible. We take the responsibility of creating a place where the social and environmental needs of our livestock are met very seriously. No hormones or medications are used unless the withholding of medication would cause the individual animal to suffer. In the situation that an animal has received medication it is identified as such. As you will see in our product list, we do offer veal for sale. In the past, veal has been avoided by many consumers due to the inhumane rearing practices by large scale commercial producers. Our veal is raised in the most humane manner at the dam’s side, outdoors, in the normal social structure of the herd, until it is of an age that it would normally separate from the dam. In an effort to enhance livestock genetic diversity the loss of genetic diversity being a critical issue in agriculture we have chosen to work with Charolais Cattle. Not only are our Charolais cattle important genetically, but their genetics - along with our farming practices - ensure that the consumer receives an exceptional quality, healthy, low fat, flavourful traditional beef or veal product.
It is important to note that our abattoir is a government-inspected, small scale local business that is qualified to process organic meats much safer for the consumer, and much more humane for the animal, than commercial processing establishments. It is also important to note that we are members of farm organizations with an environmental and/or social conscience. For further insight into our values and beliefs, as well as current agriculture issues visit these organizations websites, listed below.

Why Choose Grass-Fed Red Poll Beef?
Healthier for consumers:
- No hormones or additives;
- Much higher in omega-3 fatty acids (ALA, EPA, DHA) than grain or corn finished beef (healthier
proportion of omega-3 to omega-6 fatty acids);
- High in carotene;
- High in conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) know to be important in weight management (increases resting
metabolic rate); believed to have anti-carcinogenic effect;
- Leaner, so lower in calories.
- We rely on a local, government-inspected, family-run abattoir for processing many recent studies have
shown these small local abattoirs to be tops in food safety relative to massive corporate processing
factories.
Tasty and tender Charolais beef proven to be suited to grass-based management systems:
- Has been considered exceptional for taste and tenderness under a variety of testing situations over the
years often described as having “full” beef flavour and “succulent” texture;
- Finely, moderately marbled;
Healthier for the environment:
- Pasture and hay- based systems use much less fossil fuels and therefore the food produced is also healthier
for the environment.
More humane management:
- During all stages of our animals’ lifespan from calving to processing - we consider humane handling to be
a priority.
